Maningrida vs Ramingining

Maningrida and Ramingining are two remote Northern Territory areas with strong First Nations populations. Maningrida is far larger, with 2,297 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people compared to 742 in Ramingining. There are also notable economic differences: First Nations household income is well higher in Maningrida at $1,260, while Ramingining is much lower at $900. Maningrida also has a far higher First Nations unemployment rate of 46.0%, compared to 30.0% in Ramingining.

The gap in First Nations unemployment has widened over time. Despite this, the two areas share similar cultural and educational profiles. In both places, the vast majority of people speak a First Nations language, and Year 12 completion rates are nearly the same, sitting at 24.1% in Maningrida and 22.1% in Ramingining. Both areas also have typical First Nations ages that are older than the national figure.
