Tiwi vs Wurrumiyanga (Nguiu)

Wurrumiyanga (Nguiu) and Tiwi are two different types of Northern Territory hubs. Wurrumiyanga (Nguiu) has a much larger First Nations population, with 1,209 people, and 96.4% of residents speak a First Nations language. It faces more economic challenges, with a First Nations unemployment rate of 38.8% and a typical First Nations household income of just $579. In contrast, Tiwi is very walkable and has much better access to services, with 99.8% of homes within a 15-minute walk of public transport and health services. First Nations incomes are also far higher in Tiwi, with the usual household bringing in $1,625.

Both areas share a very similar landscape, with almost identical mean terrain slopes of around 3%. While they are physically similar, their daily environments differ greatly; Tiwi is very walkable, while Wurrumiyanga (Nguiu) is mostly car-dependent. The two areas also differ in education, as First Nations Year 12 completion is well higher in Tiwi at 37.7% compared to 29.1% in Wurrumiyanga (Nguiu).
