Coober Pedy vs Dunjiba (Oodnadatta)

Coober Pedy and Dunjiba (Oodnadatta) are remote South Australian locations with very different layouts. Dunjiba (Oodnadatta) is much more walkable, with 95.7% of homes within a 15-minute walk of groceries and 95.1% near a school. In contrast, Coober Pedy is mostly car-dependent and has far fewer First Nations residents, with 211 compared to 70 in Dunjiba (Oodnadatta). Income for First Nations households is far higher in Coober Pedy at $912, while Dunjiba (Oodnadatta) is among the lowest in the country at $489.

Both areas have tracked similarly since 2011 in that they remain completely without homes within a 10-minute walk of public transport. They also share a similar level of First Nations Year 12 completion, which sits around 17%. While Coober Pedy has a younger First Nations population, Dunjiba (Oodnadatta) has a much higher share of people who speak a First Nations language, at 27.1% compared to 19.9%.
