Cape York Wilderness vs Lockhart River

Cape York Wilderness and Lockhart River are two remote Queensland areas with very different profiles. Lockhart River has a far larger First Nations population and is much more likely to be a place where people speak a First Nations language, at 80.1%. However, it faces significant challenges, with First Nations unemployment at 41.2%. In contrast, Cape York Wilderness has a much lower First Nations unemployment rate of 8.5% and a higher rate of Year 12 completion at 33.9%.

Both areas are almost identical when it comes to access to public transport, with no homes within a 10-minute walk of a stop. Life is more centralised in Lockhart River, where 78.7% of homes are within a 15-minute walk of both schools and groceries, making it mostly car-dependent. Cape York Wilderness is car-dependent and much more isolated, with only 5.2% of homes within walking distance of groceries.
