Willowra vs Yuelamu

Willowra and Yuelamu are two remote Northern Territory areas with strong First Nations populations. Willowra has a larger population, with 207 First Nations people compared to 142 in Yuelamu. There are notable differences in education and work; First Nations Year 12 completion is far higher in Yuelamu at 18.2% compared to 7.3% in Willowra. In turn, the First Nations unemployment rate is far higher in Willowra at 65.0%, well above the 53.6% seen in Yuelamu.

Both areas sit near the national figure for the typical age of First Nations residents, with Willowra at 22 and Yuelamu at 26. They are similarly car-dependent and lack local parks, groceries, and public transport within walking distance. While Yuelamu has more homes within a 15-minute walk of a school, Willowra has more street intersections per square kilometre. The gaps in typical household income and the use of First Nations languages between the two areas have remained relatively small.
