Lajamanu vs Nyirripi and Tanami Outstations

Lajamanu and Nyirripi and Tanami Outstations are both remote Northern Territory areas with very different profiles. Lajamanu is far more populous, with 605 First Nations people compared to 255 in Nyirripi and Tanami Outstations. Residents in Nyirripi and Tanami Outstations are far older, with a typical First Nations age of 28 compared to just 20 in Lajamanu. Employment differs sharply, as the First Nations unemployment rate is far higher in Lajamanu at 18.3%, while it is 0.0% in Nyirripi and Tanami Outstations.

Both areas have tracked similarly since 2011, remaining mostly car-dependent with typical First Nations household incomes that are almost identical, at $714 for Lajamanu and $771 for Nyirripi and Tanami Outstations. They also share a very high rate of First Nations language speakers, both sitting far above the national figure. While Lajamanu has more street intersections and better walking access to health and groceries, both areas have almost no homes within a 15-minute walk of a park or public transport.
