Kowanyama vs Lockhart River

Kowanyama and Lockhart River are two remote Queensland areas with very different cultural and layout profiles. Lockhart River has a far higher share of people who speak a First Nations language (80.1%) compared to Kowanyama (2.8%). While Kowanyama has a far larger First Nations population with 937 people, its unemployment rate is well higher than that of Lockhart River, at 48.8% compared to 41.2%. In terms of local access, 96.3% of Kowanyama homes are within a 15-minute walk of a school, but no homes in Kowanyama are within a 15-minute walk of groceries, whereas 78.7% of homes in Lockhart River are.

Both areas are mostly car-dependent and lack a 15-minute-city walkshed, meaning few homes have easy access to most services. They also share similar typical First Nations household incomes, sitting at $972 in Kowanyama and $933 in Lockhart River. While the gap in Year 12 completion remains well higher in Lockhart River, both areas sit far below the national figure. This gap in school completion is 4.1 percentage points, showing a disparity that has persisted between the two locations.
