Aurukun vs Pormpuraaw

Aurukun and Pormpuraaw are two remote Queensland communities with very different local layouts. Aurukun is more walkable, with 98.5% of homes within a 15-minute walk of health services and a walkability score of 3.8 (mostly car-dependent). In contrast, Pormpuraaw is more car-dependent, and no homes are within a 15-minute walk of groceries or parks. Culturally, Aurukun has a much higher share of people who speak a First Nations language (92.3%) compared to Pormpuraaw (61.8%).

Everyday life in both places shares similar economic realities, as the typical personal income for First Nations residents is almost identical at around $310 to $317. However, employment and education differ, with First Nations unemployment far higher in Pormpuraaw (54.5%) than in Aurukun (20.6%). Pormpuraaw also has a far higher share of First Nations residents who finished Year 12 (21.8%) compared to Aurukun (10.2%).
