Byron vs Richmond Valley

Byron and Richmond Valley are two regional areas in New South Wales with different profiles for their First Nations populations. In Byron, 49.7% of First Nations people finished Year 12, which is far higher than the 28.8% in Richmond Valley. This gap is reflected in typical incomes, with First Nations households in Byron earning $1,743, well higher than the $1,311 typical in Richmond Valley. Byron also has more street intersections per square kilometre and is somewhat walkable, while Richmond Valley is mostly car-dependent.

Both areas are exactly alike in that 6.5% of people speak a First Nations language. While Richmond Valley has a far larger First Nations population with 1,866 people compared to 692 in Byron, the two areas track similarly in some everyday needs. For example, about half of the homes in both places have a 15-minute-city walkshed, meaning residents can reach most basic services on foot.
