Ballarat Lalor
Ballarat and Lalor are distinct Victorian areas with very different demographics. Ballarat has a much older population, with a typical resident aged 41 compared to 32 in Lalor, and a far higher share of people aged 65 and over (19.6% versus 8.7%). Cultural backgrounds differ sharply as well; 45.2% of Lalor's residents were born overseas and 47.0% use a language other than English at home, while those figures are much lower in Ballarat at 11.4% and 6.2% respectively. Ballarat also sees a much higher share of people with no religion (48.6%) and more people living alone (29.2%).
Both areas are remarkably similar in the way their residents live, with around 88% of homes being separate houses. This shared housing style exists alongside a widening gap in age and diversity. While Lalor is more urban with better access to parks and schools, Ballarat provides more schools per 1,000 children.
