A far lower share of people were born overseas in Halifax than in the rest of Queensland or Australia. While 12.6% of residents were born abroad, the community has strong ties to European roots, particularly English and Italian heritage.

English ancestry is most common at 43.1%, followed by Australian at 30.5% and Italian at 20.3%. Irish and Scottish roots are also present in about 10% and 8% of the population.
