Nearly 30% of people in Brisbane were born overseas, making it one of the most internationally diverse areas at this level. While many residents trace their roots to English and Australian origins, the city's population is increasingly shaped by arrivals from around the world.

English ancestry is the most common at 35.7%, followed by Australian at 30.9%, Irish at 11.1%, Scottish at 10.0% and German at 5.5%.

Overseas-born residents make up 28.3% of the population, which is well above the Queensland figure of 22.7% and has risen 2.7 percentage points since 2011. Most people were born in Australia (67.3%), but New Zealand, England, India and China are the next most common birthplaces.
