Who lives here — how many people, how old they are, and how communities identify.
Six years younger than it was in 2011, Rockhampton has seen a significant shift in its age profile. The typical resident is now 36, making the area a little younger than both the state and national figures. This change is mirrored by a rise in the proportion of children and a decline in the number of seniors.
The total population is 79,293, which is larger than about 74% of similar areas. However, the overall number of people shrank by 71% since 2011, with a loss of about 191,477 people.
Half the population is older than this age, and half younger.
Age profile
How the population splits across age groups.
Children under 15 make up 20.5% of the population, which is a little above the national figure. This is consistent with the area having far fewer seniors than most places, with those aged 65 and over falling to 15.7%.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up 8.7% of the population, which is well above the national figure and has risen 7.2 points since 2011. About 12.6% of residents are in a de facto relationship, a figure slightly above the Australian average.
