Over a quarter of people in 20,000 to 49,999 were born overseas, a figure that has climbed significantly in recent years. This area is much more diverse in its birthplaces than most similar regions, though it remains roughly in line with the national average.

English and Australian ancestries are the most common here, making up 26.5% and 25.5% of the population respectively, followed by Irish and Scottish roots.

The proportion of overseas-born residents rose 6.5 points since 2011 to reach 26.9%, which is much higher than most similar areas. While 66.7% were born in Australia, the most common overseas birthplaces are India, New Zealand, and England.
