More than a third of people in 1 million or more were born overseas, making it one of the most diverse areas of its kind. This international mix is reflected in a varied ancestry, with English and Australian roots being the most common.

English and Australian ancestries are the most frequent, making up 36.8% and 27.8% of the population. Irish and Scottish roots follow at 8.8% and 8.7%, while Italian ancestry accounts for 5.5%.

Overseas-born residents make up 36.4% of the population, which is well above the national figure of 27.7%. This proportion has risen by 1.4 percentage points since 2011, with the most common birthplaces being Australia, England, India, and New Zealand.
