Nearly 28% of people in 1 million or more were born overseas, marking this as a much more diverse area than most similar regions. While the typical resident has English or Australian roots, there is a strong presence of Irish and Scottish ancestry across the population.

English ancestry is the most common at 35.7%, followed by Australian at 30.9%. Other significant ancestral groups include Irish (11.1%), Scottish (10.0%) and German (5.5%).

The proportion of people born overseas has risen to 28.3% since 2011, which is much higher than most areas and slightly above the national figure. Most people were born in Australia (67.3%), with New Zealand, England, India and China as the next most common birthplaces.
