More than four in ten people in 1 million or more were born overseas, creating a diverse mix of backgrounds. This makes the area far more multicultural than the national average, with a significant blend of European and Asian heritage shaping the local community.

English and Australian ancestries are the most common, at 21.8% and 20.4%, while Chinese ancestry is also prominent at 11.6%.

The 41.2% of residents born overseas is among the highest for similar areas and is far above the national figure of 27.7%. This figure rose 4.6 points since 2011, with China, India, and England being the most common birthplaces outside Australia.
