Nearly half of all residents in Sydney were born overseas, making it one of the most diverse areas in the country. This international mix is seen in the ancestry data, where English, Australian, and Chinese roots are the most common.

English ancestry is the most common at 26.3%, followed by Australian at 16.0% and Chinese at 15.0%. Irish and Scottish heritage also feature prominently at 10.5% and 7.9% respectively.
