Much higher proportions of overseas-born residents live in The Gap compared to most similar areas. While 24.6% of the population was born abroad, the community remains primarily Australian and British in its roots.

Australian and English are the most common ancestries at 30.2% and 25.6%. Irish (10.2%) and Filipino (7.5%) backgrounds also make up significant portions of the local population.

About one quarter of people here were born overseas, which is a little above the Queensland figure of 22.7%. This high overseas birth rate is reflected in the diversity of origins, with 6.0% of residents born in the Philippines and 6.1% in New Zealand.
