Forty-three point seven per cent of people on Christmas Island were born overseas, a figure far above the national average. This makes it one of the most overseas-born populations in the region, though the proportion has fallen by 13 points since 2011.

Chinese is the most common ancestry at 22.2%, followed by Australian at 17.0% and English at 12.5%. Irish and Scottish ancestries follow at 3.3% and 2.8% respectively.

The overseas-born population is much higher than the 27.7% seen across Australia. While 40.8% of residents were born in Australia, other common birthplaces include England at 2.0%, New Zealand at 1.9%, and the Philippines at 1.6%.
