A far lower proportion of people were born overseas in North East than the national figure, with only 10.4% arriving from abroad. This makes the region much less diverse than most other areas in the country. Most residents here trace their roots back to the British Isles.

English and Australian ancestries are the most common, making up 46.6% and 43.5% of the population respectively. Scottish (10.2%) and Irish (9.5%) roots are also frequent in the area.

Just 10.4% of residents were born overseas, which is well below the Tasmania figure of 15.4% and far below the Australian average of 27.7%. This figure has barely changed since 2011, with 82.3% of the population born in Australia.
