More than half of the people in Monash were born overseas, a figure that is among the highest for similar areas. This creates a diverse community where Chinese and English ancestries are the most common. It is a multicultural hub where the share of overseas-born residents has climbed steadily over the last decade.

Chinese ancestry is the most common at 25.4%, followed by English at 16.6% and Australian at 14.5%. Indian and Greek ancestries also make up a significant part of the population.

Over half the population (50.9%) was born outside Australia, which is far above the 30% seen in Victoria and 27.7% nationally. This proportion rose 5.8 percentage points since 2011, with China and India being the top overseas birthplaces.
