About a quarter of people in The Gap were born overseas, placing the area around the middle for its level. This is a community with strong ties to the British Isles, where English and Australian ancestries are the most common.

English ancestry is the most frequent at 43.9%, followed by Australian (34.5%), Irish (17.5%), and Scottish (14.3%).

Roughly 24.6% of residents were born overseas, which is a little above the Queensland figure but well below the national average. This share has risen 2.2 percentage points since 2011, with England (6.2%) and New Zealand (2.9%) being the most common birthplaces outside Australia.
