Far fewer people were born overseas in the Southern Highlands compared to most other areas. Only 17.7% of residents were born outside Australia, which is much lower than the national figure. This local trend is consistent with the area's strong ties to traditional British and Australian roots.

English and Australian ancestries are the most common, making up 43.6% and 38.2% of the population. Scottish and Irish roots are also prominent, accounting for 14.7% and 14.1% respectively.

The proportion of overseas-born residents is far below the New South Wales figure of 29.3%, though it rose slightly from 16.6% in 2011. Most people here were born in Australia (75.9%), followed by England at 6.6%.
