Nearly 30% of people in the major cities of Australia were born overseas, reflecting a global population. This makes these urban areas much more diverse than most other parts of the country, with residents tracing their roots back to a wide variety of ancestral homes.
Ancestry
The ancestries people most identify with.
English and Australian are the most common ancestries, making up 36.5% and 29.9% of the population. Other significant groups include Scottish (8.1%), Irish (7.6%) and Italian (6.9%) ancestry.
Country of birth
Australia and the largest overseas communities.
The proportion of people born overseas rose 2.1 percentage points since 2011 to reach 28.0%, which is much higher than most areas. While 68.3% of people were born in Australia, the most common overseas birthplaces are England, India, China and Vietnam.
