Much higher proportions of overseas-born residents live in the Major Cities of Australia compared to most other areas. While nearly 28% of people here were born abroad, the most common ancestries remain English and Australian. This creates a diverse population base where traditional roots blend with a growing number of new arrivals.

English is the most common ancestry at 37.7%, followed by Australian at 31.4% and Irish at 11.1%. Scottish and German ancestries also make up a notable part of the population.

About 27.6% of people were born overseas, a figure that rose 2.1 percentage points since 2011 and is about the same as the national average. Aside from those born in Australia (67.8%), the most common birthplaces are New Zealand, England, India and China.
