Put Census stats in your posts

What it does

Add the CensusAtlas Stats block, search for a place, and pick the statistics you want. You get small stat tiles (population, median age, rent, incomes, walkability…) and larger charts — a trend line over the 2011, 2016 and 2021 Censuses, or a breakdown donut for things like religion, ancestry and how people get to work. Everything renders as real HTML on your server, so it’s visible to readers and search engines even with JavaScript switched off.

Install it

1. Download the plugin zip.
2. In wp-admin, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin.
3. Choose the zip, install, then activate.
4. Edit any post or page, add the CensusAtlas Stats block, and search for your suburb.

It needs WordPress 6.6 or newer. Nothing to sign up for, no API key, no account.

Making it fit your theme

The block inherits your theme’s fonts and colours, and supports the standard WordPress background, text and spacing controls. You can also set an accent colour, choose how many tiles sit per row, and switch the small sparklines or the state and national comparison lines off.

The data stays current

Figures are fetched from CensusAtlas and cached on your site, so they refresh on their own as the data here is updated — including the 2026 Census when it lands. There’s nothing to re-embed and no visitor information is ever sent to us.

Attribution & licence

Every embed renders a small credit line: a CensusAtlas link and the source of each statistic shown. That credit isn’t branding — it is the attribution the data licences require. The original data is published under CC BY 4.0 by the ABS and the other government publishers, with ODbL 1.0 covering the OpenStreetMap-derived measures such as walkability and transport access. The derived statistics CensusAtlas serves to embeds are a derivative work of those sources and are likewise published under CC BY 4.0, attribution: CensusAtlas (censusatlas.au) — displaying that attribution is the condition of using the embed API (the OpenStreetMap-derived measures additionally keep their ODbL terms: display with attribution, no bulk re-use). So there’s no option to remove the credit — but it is deliberately small and quiet.

The embed terms, in full

• Keep the attribution visible. The credit the block renders — the CensusAtlas link and the per-source lines — must stay displayed wherever the figures appear. It is the CC BY 4.0 attribution for the derived statistics and for the original publishers.
• Display use only. The API serves per-region statistics for showing on a page. Bulk harvesting, or republishing responses as a dataset, isn’t licensed.
• Show figures as published. Don’t alter values while presenting them as CensusAtlas data.
• Be a good neighbour. Cache responses (the plugin does, for 12 hours) rather than fetching per visitor. The API is free and provided as-is; versioned endpoints (/embed/v1/) keep existing installs working as it evolves.
