Torres Strait ACT
Torres Strait and ACT are two very different environments separated by nearly 3,000 kilometres. The Torres Strait has a much stronger connection to traditional culture, with 82.4% of people speaking a First Nations language. In contrast, the ACT is far more urban and accessible; it is very walkable, while the Torres Strait is mostly car-dependent. This gap is clear in daily life, as 97.6% of ACT homes are within a 10 minute walk of public transport, compared to 0% in the Torres Strait. Financial gaps are also stark, with the typical First Nations household income in the ACT being $2,289, far higher than the $1,201 found in the Torres Strait.
These two areas have tracked differently since 2011, particularly in how their residents access services. Both areas maintain high school completion rates for First Nations people well above the national figure. However, the ACT continues to provide significantly better access to essentials, with far more homes within a 15 minute walk of groceries and health services than in the Torres Strait.
