A much higher share of people own their homes outright in the Snowy Mountains compared to the state and national figures. This region is defined by a strong preference for detached houses and lower housing costs than most other areas. Roughly 40% of homes are owned completely, while the typical monthly mortgage is well below the national average.

Typical monthly mortgage payments are $1,408, which is well below the New South Wales figure of $2,167. Weekly rents are also lower than most areas at $300, although this has risen by $120 since 2011.

Separate houses are far more common here than in the rest of the state, making up 86.4% of all homes. Most of these are large, with 76.2% of homes having three or more bedrooms.

Outright home ownership is much higher here than in most areas, at 40.5%. Conversely, the 24.6% of households that rent is well below the national figure of 30.6%.
